What exactly is IQ, and can we really improve it?

What is IQ and can you improve it? Learn how intelligence tests work, debunk IQ myths, and discover brain training techniques to enhance cognition.

When someone mentions 'IQ', many people think of intelligence or geniuses. Others think of the intelligence test they took at school. But what exactly is IQ? Can we really improve it?

Here at Brainkiz, we're passionate about understanding how the brain works. Today, we're going to demystify the concept of IQ: we'll explain what it really means, and how you can train your mind to perform better.

What does IQ measure?

IQ stands for 'intelligence quotient', and is a score derived from standardised tests that measure specific cognitive abilities, to name a few:

  • Logical reasoning
  • Problem-solving
  • Memory
  • Mathematical skills
  • Verbal comprehensionSpatial perception

An IQ test measures how well you process information, not how much you know. The average score is 100. Scoring above or below this does not make you better or worse; it simply reflects the way you think at that particular moment.

How is it measured?

Modern IQ tests are not general knowledge tests. They test your thinking, not your knowledge. Some of the better known-tests are:

  • WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale)
  • Raven's Progressive Matrices
  • Stanford-Binet Test

These exercises include timed activities designed to test your skills in areas such as pattern recognition, logic, memory and visual reasoning.

Common IQ myths

Let's debunk some misconceptions:

“Your IQ never changes."

False. While your basic ability remains relatively stable, your performance can improve or deteriorate depending on factors such as your mood, how well rested you are, how stressed you are, and how much training you've done.

“IQ measures your overall intelligence.”

No. It assesses specific skills, but it doesn't measure creativity, emotional intelligence, soft skills or practical thinking.

“A high IQ guarantees success.”

Neither. Your actual success is influenced just as much, if not more, by factors such as motivation, perseverance, communication and adaptability.

Can I improve my IQ?

Things are about to get interesting: while some aspects of your IQ are genetically based, you can still train your brain to improve its performance.

How to boost your intelligence:

  1. Challenge yourself every day
Riddles, brain teasers and memory challenges can help to improve your brain's 'plasticity'. Why not start with our daily challenges?

  2. Learn something new
A language, a musical instrument or a new skill stimulates neural connections.

  3. Develop your fluid intelligence
Activities such as recognising patterns or solving abstract problems develop fluid intelligence, which is key to adapting to new situations.

  4. Look after your brain
Getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly can all improve your mental capacity.

  5. Practice mindfulness
Practising meditation and mindfulness can enhance working memory and concentration.

Intelligence is more than just a number

At Brainkiz, we believe that intelligence is much more than just a number. Whether your IQ is 90 or 140, what matters is how you use your mind to grow, solve problems, connect with others and create.

So, the next time you hear people talking about IQ, remember that it's not a fixed label, but rather a way of understanding the amazing capabilities your brain has. Like any muscle, it can be trained and strengthened.
